One week after posting a cryptic quote from American poet Maya Angelou, WNBA free agent Kelsey Mitchell dropped another interesting quote on her X account.
Mitchell wrote about not wanting anyone to hold her hand, amid free agency talks and just a week ahead of the Unrivaled's second season.
"i don’t need nobody holding my hand until and unless they really wanna hold it," she wrote. "No favors. no handouts. iykyk (if you know, you know). 🧘🏾♀️."Mitchell is coming off an impressive season with the Indiana Fever, averaging 20.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. She also led the squad to a semifinal appearance, which saw them push the eventual WNBA champions Las Vegas to five games.
Mitchell took the cudgels for the squad, following numerous injuries in its roster, including superstar Caitlin Clark, and role players Aari McDonald, Sophie Cunningham, and Sydney Colson.
The 30-year-old guard spent the last eight years with the Fever, playing as the team's anchor throughout its rebuilding years and until they became a perennial contender in 2024.
While waiting for the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Mitchell is set to play for the Unrivaled league for the first time. She will be playing with the Hive BC, one of the squad's expansion squads.
The league is set to tip off on Jan. 4.
Fever general manager reaffirms desire to sign Kelsey Mitchell in free agency
Following an astounding run in the 2025 season, Kelsey Mitchell remained the Fever's top priority in free agency.
According to Fever general manager Amber Cox, the team will look to retain Mitchell as it looks to build off their Cinderella run from the 2025 WNBA playoffs.
“I’m going to sound like a broken record from last year. The priority will be Kelsey Mitchell and making sure she remains in a Fever jersey," Cox siad. "Wow, what a season for her. She laid it all out on the line. (Mitchell) will continue to be a focal point as we enter free agency.”Signing Mitchell would retain the Fever's championship contendership next season, as they are also expected to welcome back Caitlin Clark, who only appeared in 13 games last season due to a groin strain and a bone bruise.
Contrastingly, Mitchell played all 44 regular-season games for the Fever and was the go-to player for the squad in the playoffs.
For now, teams will be watching Mitchell's performance in her first try in the Unrivaled league.
