Dolphins getting brutal NFL reality check with Tua Tagovailoa

1 hour ago 3

When the Miami Dolphins decided that it was time to move on from Tua Tagovailoa, as we heard various rumors and saw reports that the franchise was done, in doing so, they lost their leverage.

With teams now knowing the Dolphins wanted out, anything the franchise wanted in return via a trade, it wasn't going to get.

Why? Because if I know you're selling, why would I offer you anything when you are just going to cut him?

And that is exactly where the Dolphins sit right now with Tua and his huge contract -- no one wants it.

Such is the brutal reality of the situation, CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones has stated the Dolphins might be willing to do something the NFL frowns upon.

"Though Miami has tried, the Dolphins have been unable to find any takers for Tua Tagovailoa and his contract," Jones wrote. "One high-ranking team executive told CBS Sports he had considered taking on Tagovailoa if the Dolphins would send a first-round pick to take on the freight of his contract. It is the type of deal the NFL frowns upon and something that has only been done at that level with Brock Osweiler.

"There are only so many places Tagovailoa can play considering his poor performance in the cold."

Dolphins only have 1 Tua choice left

With no teams wanting to take on Tua's contract (because why would they?), the Dolphins are now being backed into a corner.

And that corner could see them cut Tua, and then eat the monster dead money hit ($99 million pre June 1, or $67 million post June 1, per Over The Cap).

In truth, neither is a great option, but Miami is now facing the reality of its situation.

No one wants Tua. At least with his contract coming with him.

There now appears to be a chance that the Dolphins have to take their lumps here and eat the huge cap hit from cutting him.

And that is a harsh reality when you pay a quarterback top money, and he turns out not to be "that" guy for the franchise.
