Dodgers could swing blockbuster trade for Red Sox's Rafael Devers in near future

The Los Angeles Dodgers' third base situation is one of the only flaws. They could swing a blockbuster trade for Rafael Devers of the Boston Red Sox to fix things.

Max Muncy has struggled as the team's third baseman this year. He has a club option for 2026 and could be cut loose. That would leave a hole in the hot corner. Devers could soon become available after recent tension between him and the chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow. Breslow requested that Devers play first base. His request was met by Devers saying he does not see eye to eye with Breslow and that the team was not staying true to their words after already making him change positions once.

As tensions between Devers and the Red Sox grow, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller suggested the Dodgers could swing a trade for him at some point, likely in the offseason. However, the biggest concern will be their payroll, as Devers is playing on a 10-year, $313 million deal.

"Even if they decline their options for both Muncy and Chris Taylor, the Dodgers do already have 11 players slated for at least eight figures next season, that nucleus is scheduled for a combined sum of nearly $225 million," wrote Miller. "If you think that's going to slow them down, though, you must be new here. Los Angeles currently has an estimated payroll north of $400 million this season, on the hook for over $550 million after you factor in the tax payment. The difference between 11 players making nearly $225 million and 12 players making about $255 million is practically a pittance to them."

The Dodgers' farm system has enough talent to get a trade for Devers done. The Red Sox may have mixed feelings about sending Devers to play with Mookie Betts. However, if Devers continues to be a distraction, he could be traded to the highest bidder.

It is unlikely the Red Sox would trade Devers if they are in the postseason mix, especially considering the fact that his play is a big reason why they are in that position. However, they could explore a move in the offseason. They could make a strong push to retain Alex Bregman, and even if they do not, they could move Marcelo Mayer to third base.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers would be giving Devers the opportunity to go back to playing third base. Even if he is not the best defender, the Dodgers' lineup would be the closest thing to unstoppable that the league has ever seen.
