When the New York Giants selected tackle Evan Neal with the seventh overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the thought was that the right tackle position would be fixed for Big Blue for the next decade.
Boy, was that wrong.
Neal has been one of the biggest NFL draft busts over the last three seasons, so much so that the Giants are giving him one last chance to salvage his career by moving him from tackle to guard in 2025.
It's a position change that Neal has no choice but to welcome, and, based on the pro traits he's flashed so far, is in his best interest to make.
In fact, former Giants offensive lineman Shaun O'Hara believes it's a role that Neal can thrive in.
"I think it's probably the right move," O'Hara said, via the New York Post. "I think last year was a year for him to either prove you can play tackle or you’re gonna have to try to play something else. Knowing the type of kid he is, I think he's gonna attack it head-on and he’s always had a positive attitude. Now he’s just got to put it all together. He’s got all the tools."
Having the tools is only part of the equation for a successful position change in the pros. Neal has to prove his tools translate to on-field production, and he may not have a lot of time to accomplish that.
"The physical side of it, he should be fine with, he’s a big, strong kid," O'Hara said. "He's as big as a house. He's got to start using that size to his advantage."
Players like Neal, who rely on their size and strength advantage as collegiate tackles to dominate their competition, often struggle to keep up with the speed and pace of NFL edge rushers. And it's those college tackles who often transition well to the inside.
But when a player is drafted as high as Evan Neal was -- teams traditionally don't spend top-10 picks on guards -- there's real reluctance to admit defeat and slide a prized first-rounder to guard.
However, guards have increasingly more value in today's NFL. And if Neal can become a bully on the inside for the New York Giants, he'll re-emerge as a big part of the offense's future plans.
It's now or never for him.
