The growth of the Little Hawkeye Conference in Iowa high school athletics continues, as the league recently confirmed they have reached an agreement with Des Moines Christian High School.
Starting with the 2026-27 school year, Des Moines Christian will join the Little Hawkeye Conference for all sports outside of football, which uses districts on a two-year rotating schedule to determines leagues.
Currently, Des Moines Christian is part of the West Central Conference along with schools like Van Meter, Pleasantville, Madrid and Earlham.
By joining the Little Hawkeye Conference, they will be competing with programs like Dallas Center-Grimes, Indianola, Newton, Norwalk and Pella. The league also invited Ames, who accepted and will join in 2026-27 alongside the Lions.
“A key factor in this decision was the clear vision the Little Hawkeye Conference has for the future - a vision that includes schools of different sizes working together under a divisional model,” Des Moines Christian head of student activities Jon Muller said (credit to KCCI for the quotes). “We are deeply grateful for the invitation and excited for the opportunities this move provides our student-athletes to compete and grow in a strong, values-driven environment.”
The Little Hawkeye Conference has sent out invites to Urbandale, Nevada, PCM, Knoxville and Van Meter as they look to continue to grow. The plan is to balance out the league with two divisions based on the size of the schools competing.
Des Moines Christian recently made the girls state soccer quarterfinals and advanced to the girls state basketball tournament this past winter. They also have had success at state cross country and state track and field over the years.
