David Montgomery injury update Week 17: Lions get massive news on RB's status for Christmas game vs. Vikings

David Montgomery will play on Christmas Day despite being listed as questionable. The Detroit running back battled an illness that had his availability in question for the matchup versus the Vikings.

Montgomery is in his second season with the Lions after signing in 2023.

NFL Network's Mike Garofalo broke the news about Montgomery's status on X. The report came after Montgomery sat out Tuesday's practice and only participated in a limited capacity the following day.

"Montgomery is expected to play," Garafolo tweeted.

Montgomery is under contract with the team through 2027. However, social media activity this week raised questions about whether he wants to stay long-term. Montgomery liked an Instagram comment that told him to request a trade after the season.

Lions coach Dan Campbell discussed how David Montgomery has dealt with getting fewer opportunities.

The running back hasn't had 10 carries in a game since facing Washington on Nov. 9. His numbers have dropped significantly as Jahmyr Gibbs has become Detroit's go-to back. Montgomery has 140 touches for 649 yards and eight touchdowns, while Gibbs has 207 carries for 1,102 yards and 13 scores.

"David's a pro," Campbell said to reporters on Dec. 17. "He goes about his business (and) he handles it. I know that's not easy. He's a damn good back. Every good player wants their chance to help the team win and get some production, so I know it can't be easy."

Campbell added that he and his staff are looking at different ways to use Montgomery more.

The result of the Lions-Vikings game could decide the NFC North title.
