George Pickens is still playing on the franchise tag, but the Dallas Cowboys have already received an encouraging sign before training camp. His decision to join Dak Prescott's offseason workout suggests contract uncertainty has not changed his commitment to the team.
George Pickens joins Dak Prescott’s offseason workout before camp
The Cowboys never appeared overly concerned that George Pickens would become a training camp holdout. Although the wide receiver skipped voluntary organized team activities, team leaders consistently expressed confidence he would be ready once mandatory work began and training camp approached.
That confidence appears well founded. According to DLLS Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill, Pickens is participating in Dak Prescott's annual offseason workout in Park City, Utah, alongside the Cowboys' offensive skill players before the team reports to Oxnard later this month.
The gathering includes CeeDee Lamb, the rest of the wide receiver room, running backs, tight ends, and backup quarterbacks Joe Milton and Sam Howell. While the workouts are informal, they have become an important opportunity for Prescott to build chemistry with teammates before the regular practice schedule begins.
Pickens enters the season after accepting the franchise tag, which guarantees him $27 million for 2026. Dallas chose not to negotiate a long-term extension this offseason, leaving both sides open to revisiting contract talks after the season.
Even with that uncertainty, the organization has repeatedly emphasized Pickens' desire to compete. Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, Brian Schottenheimer, and Prescott each expressed confidence throughout the offseason that the receiver remained committed to the team despite missing voluntary sessions.
Schottenheimer echoed that belief when Pickens reported for mandatory minicamp. The head coach said he never questioned the receiver's investment in the locker room or his commitment to helping Dallas compete for a Super Bowl.
The upcoming season remains the biggest test for both sides. Pickens has every opportunity to increase his long-term value with another productive campaign, while the Cowboys can evaluate whether he deserves to become part of the franchise's long-term plans after the 2026 season.
