The Detroit Tigers are sending a few players to the 2026 MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia, but one of the more exciting players heading to Philly is the hometown kid, Kevin McGonigle.
He's just 21 years old, and he's already making some incredible history this season. Before the All-Star break, McGonigle has already put up 5.1 bWAR. But his on-base ability this year is something incredible.
As Tigers PR shared on Twitter/x, McGonigle has joined only Mike Trout and Al Kaline in MLB history as the only players 21 years old and younger to reach base at least 160 times before the All-Star break.
Kevin McGonigle joins Mike Trout and Al Kaline in MLB history with on-base feat
"Kevin McGonigle has reached base 160 times this season," Tigers PR shared. "Since the first All-Star Game in 1933, only two players aged 21 or younger have posted a higher total before the break: Mike Trout (170 in 2013) and Al Kaline (169 in 1955)."
Anytime a player can be associated with Trout and Kaline, it's going to be a good thing. And this statistic for McGonigle shows just how incredible he's been to begin his career.
Kaline is an MLB legend, and Trout is sure to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when his career is over. McGonigle has a ways to go to match those two, but he's off to a good start.
This season, McGonigle has 98 hits, 59 walks, and three hit-by-pitches this year. That's 160 total times reaching base for McGonigle, making for a strong .395 on-base percentage, especially for someone in their rookie year.

The 21-year-old won't turn 22 until August 18, and with two more games to go until the MLB All-Star break, the Tigers infielder has a chance to get a little closer to Trout and Kaline.
It would take going 5-for-5 on back-to-back nights just to tie Trout and surpass Kaline, so most likely he's going to wind up No. 3 all-time since the All-Star Game became a thing for total times reaching base no older than 21 years old before the All-Star break.
This is an incredible feat for McGonigle and shows just how incredible his rookie season has been. He's a legitimate MVP candidate and the runaway AL Rookie of the Year so far. And this statistic only helps contextualize how good he's been this season.
