D'Andre Swift injury fantasy update: Bears' Kyle Monangai outlook for Week 9

13 hours ago 3

The Chicago Bears revealed on Friday's injury report that D'Andre Swift is out and won't play in Week 9. For fantasy football purposes, it's a tough loss, as the Cincinnati Bengals are the best matchup a running back could ask for.

Swift has dealt with this groin issue for some time, and has been questionable the last few weeks. While he had played every week so far, Swift is now missing the Bears' Week 9 matchup after not practicing all week.

With the lead running back out for the Bears, there is a clear player who should be in lineups. Seventh-round rookie running back Kyle Monangai will get the bulk of the work for Chicago, and is a great start in fantasy this week.

Why Bears' Kyle Monangai is a great start with D'Andre Swift out

Regardless of the matchup, if Swift were ever to be ruled out, it would be a competition between Monangai and Roschon Johnson for the backup job. However, Johnson is also out for the Bears' Week 9 matchup, leaving Monangai as the clear lead back.

Travis Homer and Brittain Brown will see the rest of the backfield share, but with Brown being a practice squad elevation and Homer not logging any touches this season, Monangai is in line for the majority of the workload.

The 23-year-old rookie will be the Bears' starter against the Bengals, in what is the best possible matchup for a running back. The Bengals' defense allows the most points in the NFL to running backs.

Cincinnati has allowed 28.2 fantasy points per game to running backs and has allowed 1,057 rushing yards in eight games, with eight touchdowns allowed. Among teams that have played eight games or fewer, the Bengals have given up more than 100 rushing yards than the next closest team.

Monangai has 42 rushing attempts for 186 yards and one touchdown on the year. He's averaging 4.43 yards per attempt, while Swift averages 4.63 yards per attempt.

Against the New Orleans Saints, Monangai had 13 touches for 81 yards and one touchdown, along with two catches for 13 yards. It was his lone game with more than eight touches, and it's a look into what he could do for Chicago as the lead back.

Now Monangai will get the bulk of the work and will face one of the worst defenses in the NFL. The Bengals just allowed the New York Jets to run for 254 yards, with Breece Hall going for 133 on 18 carries and backup Isaiah Davis running for 65 on seven attempts.

There isn't a better matchup for Monangai in his first chance as the starting running back. The seventh-round rookie is a clear start this week and should have plenty of opportunities against a bad Bengals defense in Week 9.
