Nico Hoerner didn't scream. He didn't gesture. He didn't curse.
He simply turned around to the home-plate umpire after a questionable strike call and shared a simple thought: "You're having a really bad day so far."
The Chicago Cubs' second baseman was ejected immediately.
Hoerner couldn't believe it.
In audio released by the Cubs' Marquee Sports Network, Hoerner simply repeats what he said, as if trying to figure out if the umpire didn't hear him right.
Even when Cubs manager Craig Counsell sprints out to defend his player, all Hoerner can do is share with the skipper the exact message he'd already delivered to the umpire.

It almost seems like a skit.
Hoerner is basically saying, Did you really just eject me for that?
There are certainly much worse ways to show up an umpire than what Hoerner did. He was just getting the thought of his chest and moving on.
But in the end, apparently the bad day extended to a short fuse, and Hoerner lit the match.
