Samuel L. Jackson recalls not having a clue about his role in Kendrick Lamar's halftime performance

Samuel L. Jackson wasn’t truly aware of his role in Kendrick Lamar’s iconic Super Bowl halftime performance until rehearsals.

At least that’s what he told singer and actress Paloma Faith on her Mad Sad Bad podcast earlier this week, where he reflected on many topics, including how he’s been called to be "an agent of change" during his career. This also includes Lamar’s halftime performance, where he portrayed a satirical version of Uncle Sam. "Now, see, I didn’t know that’s what they were doing," he told Faith, reflecting on his performance. "It wasn’t until dress rehearsal that I looked up on that stage and I go, 'Oh sh*t, that’s a flag…We’re being revolutionary,'" he continued.

The legendary actor went on to explain: "Something about me or my persona has put me in the right place at the right time in a change of the zeitgeist, in a way, in a lot of different moments in my life…I have to accept that that’s what I’m meant to be sometimes, an agent of change, whether I know it or not, and to be proud of it and to know that God has placed me in a place that I can be influential in a real and positive way."

Jackson’s role in the halftime show did, indeed, end up being a huge talking point of the evening, adding to his long resume of iconic portrayals. Of this, he stated: "I realized you’re being put in this place for a reason and you’re being dressed this way for a reason and you are a part of change."

And once again, Samuel L. Jackson is a part of a cultural, groundbreaking moment that people will never forget.
