When it comes to talent on the wrestling mat, not many can match AJ Ferrari. However, with Ferrari and his abilities come a lot of loud noise.
Ferrari, who started his career at Oklahoma State before competing for Cal State Bakersfield last year, has transferred to Nebraska to compete. He originally signed with North Carolina, but the university did not allow him to enroll.
A former national champion and two-time All-American, Ferrari owns a career record of 51-2 at the NCAA Div. I level. He will immediately be thrust into the starting lineup for the Huskers, who are coming off strong national championship run themselves.
"We're excited about AJ joining our family here at Nebraska," head coach Mark Manning said. "This decision was a collaborative effort from my team, staff and our administration. AJ's wrestling accomplishments speak to the dedication, work ethic and competitive spirit that aligns with our program.
"We believe AJ adds tremendous value to our team's fight and passion for our sport."
Prior to joining Oklahoma State, Ferrari went 96-1 as a prep, becoming the No. 1 ranked wrestler overall in his class while winning two Texas state titles at Allen High School. He also competed for Blair Academy and Bergen Catholic, both of which are located in New Jersey.
In 2017, Ferrari was a champion at both Fargo Freestyle and Walsh Jesuit Ironman tournaments, claimed the bronze at the 2018 Cadet Freestyle World Championships and won the 2018 Junior Folkstyle National Championship.
Ferrari, though, has caused waves with the wrestling community for his actions on and off the mat at times. If he can maintain his composure, Nebraska will have a national title contender in its lineup.
