Cowboys named best landing spot for powerful former 1,000-yard running back

The Dallas Cowboys' backfield could look a lot different in 2026.

The Cowboys entered the 2025 season with Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders as their top-two backs, but both are slated to hit free agency in March. Even Malik Davis, who has flashed during his career, is a restricted free agent.

While Sanders is highly unlikely to be back, Williams and the Cowboys have routinely expressed mutual interest in staying together.

Even if Williams returns, the Cowboys are going to need at least one more running back to add to a backup competition that will include rookie Jaydon Blue.

With a clear need at the position, Pro Football Focus' Mason Cameron predicts the Cowboys will sign Atlanta Falcons pending free agent running back Tyler Allgeier.

"Although he’s been overshadowed by Bijan Robinson in Atlanta, Allgeier is quietly one of the NFL's most productive backs. His 84.0 PFF rushing grade ranks top five among qualifying running backs over the last two seasons while also not fumbling a single time over that span," Cameron wrote. "As a premier zone runner, Allgeier would fit in well with the Cowboys' inside zone-heavy scheme."

Allgeier began his career with a bang, tallying 1,035 yards in 2022.

But since then, he has taken a back seat to Bijan Robinson, which has obviously hurt his production.

The former fifth-round pick has still managed to stand out when given chances, though, and mostly because he runs with as much power as any back in the NFL.

Assuming the Cowboys do the expected and re-sign Williams, Allgeier would be a fine complement to him.

The BYU product can do some of the dirty work between the tackles and in short-yardage situations, which will help Williams avoid the kind of wear and tear he succumbed to late in the 2025 campaign.

And, Allgeier has proven he can take on a bigger workload if needed to step up in the event Williams gets hurt.

We could definitely see the Cowboys simply re-upping with Williams and Davis and going into the offseason with those two and Blue on the depth chart.

However, there is a world where Williams and/or Davis don't come back, which leaves the door open for the possibility the Cowboys sign Allgeier.
