The Indianapolis Colts used the transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones on Tuesday, and the move will have a resounding effect on NFL free agency.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news of Indianapolis tagging Jones, which means wide receiver Alec Pierce will officially hit the market as an unrestricted free agent.
Schefter did add that the Colts are still working on signing Pierce to a long-term deal, but if both sides can't come to terms, Pierce will be up for grabs in free agency next week.
"With Daniel Jones getting the transition tag, the Colts cannot tag free-agent-to-be WR Alec Pierce. But the Colts still hope to work out long-term deals with both players," Schefter said.
The Colts not tagging Pierce will make the Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, and Tennessee Titans very happy.
Adding Pierce would give Los Angeles and New England a dynamic deep threat for their franchise quarterbacks. Both teams also have the cap space to sign Pierce.
Tennessee is also a logical fit for Pierce, as the 25-year-old would step in as Cam Ward's No. 1 receiver and could break out into a legitimate star with the Titans by garnering more targets.
Pierce remaining with the Colts is still a possibility, but with Jones getting the tag over him, there's a higher chance he departs in free agency and signs with a receiver-needy team, such as the Chargers, Patriots, and Titans.
