Shedeur Sanders is looking more and more like a potential starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns heading into his rookie year. The Colorado football legend took one of the most shocking draft slides in NFL history when he fell to the fifth round, but he could make the teams who passed on him regret their decision sooner than expected.
Sanders recently participated in Cleveland’s rookie minicamp and competed with fellow 2025 draftee Dillon Gabriel. The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round, giving themselves four viable quarterback options between their two rookies, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett.
While initial reports placed Sanders at the bottom of the depth chart, a Browns reporter came out with a major update on Sanders’ minicamp performance that could shake things up.
The Athletic’s Zac Jackson joined the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show to report on the rookie quarterback battle, giving Sanders a clear edge over Gabriel.
“In just throwing the ball, it’s not close. Shedeur Sanders. It’s not close,” Jackson said. “When they’re on the field, they break the huddle from team stretch and team jog, and they both go pick up the ball and throw it … it’s no question.”
After impressing the media in his early action with the Browns, Sanders’ chances at Cleveland’s starting gig are steadily improving. The former Buffaloes signal-caller has many doubters to silence after controversial reports on his pre-draft interviews and the involvement of his father, Deion, brought him a suffocating amount of negative publicity.
Given Cleveland’s young roster and timeline, Shedeur could emerge as an eventual starter for the rebuilding Browns. Jackson made further comments on the enigmatic rookie that should have Browns fans brimming with excitement.
“I’m impressed with the way Shedeur threw the ball, it jumps off his hands … This is what an NFL quarterback’s supposed to look like.”
