Preakness Stakes post positions: Full draw and odds for the 2025 Triple Crown race

The second leg of the 2025 Triple Crown is nearing — but there will be no horse vying for the Triple Crown title at this year's Preakness Stakes.

Just weeks ago, it was trainer Bill Mott's horse Sovereignty that captured a Kentucky Derby victory. But Sovereignty won't be in the field for the Preakness Stakes, meaning there's no chance of a horse entering the Belmont Stakes with living Triple Crown aspirations. Nevertheless, this year's Preakness Stakes will still bring some excitement.

Journalism, which finished second in Churchill Downs, figures to be among the heavy favorites to win the iconic Baltimore race. But as post positions are revealed Monday prior to Saturday's competition, the spotlight will be up for grabs with Sovereignty sitting out the Preakness Stakes.

What is the best post position in horse racing?

Post position in horse racing is mostly dependent on the horse. A horse that's better with space might be better on the outside, but that's not the case for all of them. 

When it comes to the Preakness Stakes, there's been winners from a variety of post positions. The No. 6 spot has resulted in the most victories at 17 total, but since the starting gate was implemented in 1909, every position has produced a winner at some point.

Last year's champion, Seize the Grey, started out of the No. 6 gate and won after being considered a longshot.
