Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders has narrative-breaking relationship with Browns’ Kevin Stefanski

Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders was once deemed a helicopter parent and predicted to be all over his son Shedeur’s first NFL coach once the “Grown QB” made it to the league.

Shedeur is now a member of the Cleveland Browns after sliding to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft. As his head coach, Kevin Stefanski, shared, Coach Prime isn’t anywhere near the program since the two do not have a functional relationship.

Stefanski noted he does have a relationship with Buffs offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, though, which is where he got his intel on Sanders.

SI’s Ben Amendariz reported the situation in Berea and Boulder: Shedeur is doing his thing, and Deion is being supportive from afar while focusing on CU.

“Stefanski’s comments help put to rest a narrative that’s followed Shedeur Sanders since draft night—that his father might overshadow his NFL development. Instead, what’s becoming clear is that Deion Sanders is a supportive father and a head coach with his own football team to manage,” Amendariz wrote.

“As questions about Deion’s influence in Cleveland begin to fade, Stefanski and his staff can focus on building a winning team while Shedeur stays committed to earning his place within it.”

Coach Prime’s Buffs aren’t expected to make the same waves without Shedeur and Travis Hunter. They’re not predicted by many to make a bowl game in 2025.

It would be understandable if Coach Prime were more concerned with what was happening in Cleveland, since some thought he’d eventually try to usurp Shedeur’s first NFL coach if things weren’t going well.

That’s not the case. He’s compartmentalized his way into being a good father who isn’t overstepping and a good coach who’s appropriately focused on his team.
