The Boston Red Sox are calling up a top-10 prospect in all of baseball.
Alex Bregman's quad injury gave them no choice.
ESPN insider Jeff Passan broke the news on Saturday: Marcelo Mayer is coming to the major leagues.
The 22-year old is hitting .271 and slugging .471 at Triple-A Worcester.
Mayer is a 6-foot-3 shortstop who was taken No. 4 overall out of a California high school in the 2021 draft.
Bregman was hurt Friday rounding first base, appearing to tweak his lower body on an awkward step.

Red Sox fans are hoping Mayer is just the first step. They also want Roman Anthony, maybe the top prospect in baseball, called up.
Anthony doesn't have a spot right now, because the outfield is crowded in Boston.
But the infield suddenly became very open for the Red Sox, and so Mayer is coming.
If he plays as well as many expect, he'll be tough to get rid of for the next decade-plus.
