The wait is over in Berea. With the hiring of Mike Rutenberg as defensive coordinator, head coach Todd Monken has officially locked in the staff tasked with leading the Browns into the 2026 season.
After a coaching and coordinator searches defined by GM Andrew Berry's frustratingly long interview process, it's time to get to work.
Here is the breakdown of the main braintrust joining Monken’s staff:
Defensive Coordinator: Mike Rutenberg
Poached from the Falcons, Rutenberg is the final piece of the puzzle. While he replaces Jim Schwartz, don't expect a total teardown. Monken has been vocal about maintaining the "attacking style" that made Cleveland’s defense a juggernaut.
Rutenberg brings a reputation for elite pass-defense schemes, having recently helped the Jets and Falcons rank among the league's best in yards allowed. He’s a "players' coach" with a Cornell pedigree who knows how to blend Ivy League smarts with a relentless, aggressive front.

Offensive Coordinator: Travis Switzer
Monken didn’t have to look far for his right-hand man. Switzer follows Monken from Baltimore, where he served as the architect of the Ravens' dominant run game. A former offensive lineman at Akron, Switzer returns to Northeast Ohio to marry his "ground and pound" philosophy with Monken’s vertical passing attack. His primary mission? Revitalizing the Browns' backfield and making life easy for the quarterback.
Offensive Line Coach: George Warhop
The "old gang" is back together. Warhop returns for his second stint in Cleveland (previously 2009–2013) after following Monken from Baltimore. He is a veteran technician with decades of NFL experience, famously known for coaching Hall of Famer Joe Thomas during his first run in Berea. Warhop’s job is simple, but massive: stabilize a unit that struggled with protection last year and integrate the "Ravens-style" physicality Monken demands.
Special Teams Coordinator: Byron Storer
After the "unspecial" teams' struggles in 2025, Monken turned to a disciple of the legendary Rich Bisaccia. Storer comes from Green Bay with a track record of developing kick/punt returner All-Pros. He’s a former fullback who coaches with a "grinder" mentality, focused on eliminating the coverage lapses and blocked punts that haunted Cleveland last season.
The Retention: Duce Staley (RB Coach)
In a move that provides locker room continuity, the player favorite Duce Staley remains on staff. His relationship with the running backs and expertise in the rushing game will be the bridge between the previous regime and the new offensive wrinkles being installed this spring.
