Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey, has revealed few glimpses of the epic action fantasy film, featuring Tom Holland's Telemachus and Anne Hathaway's Penelope, in its first look.
Scheduled for release on July 17, 2025, the film features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon as the central hero, Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland as his determined son, Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as his faithful wife, Penelope.
The newly revealed stills, published in Empire magazine, showcase Holland in armor as Telemachus and Hathaway as a resolute Penelope. The Odyssey, which is one of the highly anticipated films releasing in 2026, is shot entirely on IMAX's 70 mm film cameras, with a budget of $250 million, which is Nolan's most expensive film to date.
The Odyssey revealed: Holland & Hathaway shine in the first official stills from Nolan's Homeric adaptation
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey brings together a vast ensemble cast extending well beyond the core family of Damon, Holland, and Hathaway. This project marks another reunion for Nolan with several past collaborators.
Robert Pattinson rejoins the director after leading the mind-bending thriller Tenet (2020), while Benny Safdie, who delivered a standout performance in Oppenheimer (2023), also returns. The film also marks Matt Damon's third collaboration with the director of Interstellar, which also featured Anne Hathaway.
The cast also features Charlize Theron, who is expected to play the powerful sorceress Circe, and Lupita Nyong’o. Notably, Zendaya joins the epic in an undisclosed role, reuniting with her Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland. The recently released stills also confirmed the inclusion of Mia Goth as Melantho, Penelope’s maid.
The film is based on Homer’s Odyssey, one of the most foundational works of ancient Greek literature. This epic poem, believed to have been composed in the 8th century BCE, chronicles the decade-long, dangerous journey of the Greek hero Odysseus as he attempts to return home to Ithaca following the Trojan War.
The filming was wrapped up on August 8, 2025, in Los Angeles, after its 91-day production, which was held in various places across the world.
Universal Pictures has slated Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey for a global theatrical release on July 17, 2026. Given the film’s massive scope and Nolan’s reputation as a director whose films are cinematic events, the anticipation for this project has reached fever pitch long before its premiere.
As such, when IMAX released a limited batch of tickets for 70mm screenings of The Odyssey, a full year before its 2026 premiere, the tickets were sold out within minutes. This set a cinematic record for the longest advance pre-sale in history. These tickets were offered at only about 26 specially equipped venues globally.
