Chicago Cubs, for first time since 1898 Orphans, accomplish incredible statistical feat

When something from long ago occurs, it's often popular to see how many players on a given team were alive the last time something happens.

What the Chicago Cubs accomplished on Friday night doesn't need such a look-up. It last occurred 127 years ago, in 1898.

The year is courtesy of MLB stats expert Sarah Langs.

The stat: The Cubs have 11 games with double-digit runs in their first 51 games. That's the most such performances for Chicago in that span since they did the same thing in 1898.

Incredibly, they weren't even known as the Cubs then. They were called the Chicago Orphans.

The high-scoring squad finished fourth in the National League that year behind the notably strong Boston Beaneaters, the soon-to-be-moved Baltimore Orioles and a classic rival in the Cincinnati Reds.

This year's Cubs has benefited in large part from the offensive breakthrough of Pete Crow-Armstrong.

PCA slugged two home runs on Friday night to lead the way in a 13-6 comeback win over the Reds. Seiya Suzuki and Dansby Swanson each added a home run, as well.

Safe to say none of these guys remember the Chicago Orphans, but they're now keeping that long-ago club company.
