Chelsea vs. Tottenham permutations: What result means for European chase, relegation fight
If Chelsea win:
They will move onto 52 points from 37 matches, level with eighth-place Brentford but above them on goal difference, putting them in a position to qualify for at least the Conference League and, perhaps, the Europa League, depending on results on the final day.
Defeat means Tottenham are not yet safe from the drop. They would remain two points ahead of 18th-place West Ham with one round of matches left, but, crucially, they have a vastly superior goal difference. That means a draw on the final day would almost certainly be enough to keep them up, regardless of West Ham's result against Leeds United.
If Tottenham win:
They will officially be safe from relegation. Victory would put them on 41 points, five above West Ham with only one match left. It would also mean Chelsea would be unable to finish the season any higher than eighth place in the standings.
If it's a draw:
Spurs would be almost safe. They would enter the final matchday with a three-point cushion to West Ham, and because of their goal difference, they would only drop into the bottom three if they lose to Everton and West Ham beat Leeds while making up a goal-difference deficit of 13.
A draw would put Chelsea three points back of seventh-place Brighton and Hove Albion and two behind Brentford in eighth, so they would need favours on the last day to get into Europe.
Who do Chelsea and Tottenham play on the final day?
Chelsea conclude their campaign with a visit to Sunderland, who are still in with a shout of qualifying for Europe. Spurs are at home to 12th-place Everton, who are likely (albeit not mathematically) out of contention to finish in the top eight.
Both those games kick off at 4 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET) on Sunday, May 24, along with all the other final Premier League matches of the season.
