Charlotte Hornets bring back former NBA Champion

1 hour ago 3

The Charlotte Hornets made another roster move Monday, continuing to tinker with their depth pieces as they ride a nine-game winning streak.

That said, their recent signing is a familiar face.

According to NBA insider Michael Scotto, the Hornets have signed Pat Connaughton.

For those wondering why Charlotte, waived Connaughton last week and now re-signed him, it was because the Hornets didn't have enough roster spots.

In trades for Tyus Jones and Xavier Tillman Sr., Charlotte did not give up any players in return, meaning they needed to make room in order to officially acquire them.

Connaughton was eventually cut in favor of Tillman Sr. staying with the team, while Tyus Jones was shipped out to Dallas for Malaki Branham.

To complete the cycle, Charlotte waived Branham Monday in order to free up the spot needed to bring Connaughton back.

Although he's only played in 22 games this season, averaging seven minutes per game, Connaughton's impact in the locker room has been much more valuable.

To begin with, he's one of two former NBA Champions on the roster, following the trade for Tillman Sr..

He also has ties to head coach Charles Lee, as the two spent time together in Milwaukee, including their title season in 2020-2021.

As the Hornets attempt to match their franchise record with 10 consecutive wins Monday against the Detroit Pistons, they'll be happy to have Connaughton back as a mentor and occasional depth piece.

After all, he is shooting over 40% from three-point range this season.
