The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to have one of the more talented rosters in the AFC this coming season. But taking any roster from 90 players down to 53 is always a challenge.
When the Chargers open training camp later this summer, they are going to have some difficult decisions to make. Getting down to 53 players often takes some creativity, so general manager Joe Hortiz should consider moving some players who may not otherwise make the squad and getting something in return for them, rather than just cutting them and getting nothing back.
These four players could each fit that category for the Chargers this offseason.
Players for Chargers to consider trading before cutting
Kimani Vidal, RB
The Chargers selected Kimani Vidal in the sixth round of last year's draft and despite showing promise in training camp and the preseason, he was only used sparingly in the team's rushing attack. After adding Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton this offseason, it's hard to see that changing much.
Vidal may not be the best fit for Greg Roman's offense and now undrafted free agent Raheim Sanders could be a player to push for a roster spot this summer. Vidal could find it difficult to stick around.
Justin Eboigbe, DT
Another one of last year's draft picks, Justin Eboigbe did next to nothing in his first year in the league. After bringing in Da'Shawn Hand and Naquan Jones in free agency and then using a third-round pick on Jamaree Caldwell, it may be tough for Eboigbe to make up any more ground in year two.
Ja'Sir Taylor, CB
The Chargers signed Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste in free agency after moving on from Kristian Fulton and Asante Samuel Jr. this offseason. They also used a seventh-round pick on Trikweze Bridges.
Second-year players Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still should figure in as key contributors on this year's defense and though there could still be room for Ja'Sir Taylor as a slot corner, he is by no means guaranteed a roster spot.
Quentin Johnston, WR
The Chargers probably won't cut Quentin Johnston, at least not before the season starts, but they should consider trading him anyway.
Johnston has struggled since being a first-round pick in 2023 and with the emergence of Ladd McConkey and the team using a second-round pick on Tre Harris this year, Johnston is going to fall down the depth chart. The Chargers may consider cutting their losses and seeing what they can get for him.
