Is Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry still in prime at age 38?
No, but is he still capable of being a high-level No. 1 scoring option on a championship-contending squad? Absolutely, but it’ll be up to the Dubs to give the four-time NBA champion the supporting cast he needs moving forward to keep their short-term title window open.
In Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale’s opinion, the Warriors should possess interest in pairing Curry with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ three-time All-Star guard.
“So long as Steph is on this roster and operating, when healthy, at an All-NBA level, the Golden State Warriors are obligated to pursue all-in moves until the wheels fall off,” Favale wrote Wednesday. “At the very least, they must pretend that's what they're doing.”
“Going on 30 in September, Donovan Mitchell is young enough (or close to it) for the Warriors to peddle him as their ticket to immediate contention and bridge into the future. They should cross their fingers for the Cleveland Cavaliers flame out of the Eastern Conference Finals and open themselves up to an offseason roster-razing.”
While Mitchell has been tremendous for the Cavaliers this postseason (he’s averaging 25.9 points per game in 15 outings), he probably wants to replay the final quarter of Cleveland’s Game 1 Eastern Conference Finals clash against the New York Knicks.
Why? Well, because his failure to impose his will in the quarter (three points) contributed to the organization’s epic collapse that saw them squander a 22-point lead in less than nine minutes and eventually fall short in overtime. Still, one subpar quarter of basketball doesn’t change the fact that Mitchell is one of the most explosive combo guards in the league with arguably the best high-pickup in downhill driving scenarios.
Add in the fact that the Louisville product has shot at least 36% from three in his first four seasons with the Cavaliers, and it’s easy to see why he’d be a good fit alongside Curry in the Bay.
Simply put, Favale's decision to name Mitchell a potential offseason trade target for the Dubs is justified.
