Pressure has followed Caitlin Clark through every stage of her basketball career. It surrounded her record-breaking run at Iowa, intensified when she entered the WNBA and accompanied her to Berlin for her FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup debut.
Clark’s answer to it has not changed.
“This is such a privilege and honor to be here,” Clark said when asked about the expectations surrounding her after Team USA’s opening victory. “I don’t worry about all that.”
Clark’s complete response, shared in a postgame video, provided a revealing look at her mindset after a nearly flawless international debut.
The Indiana Fever guard recorded 14 points, 11 assists and no turnovers in 25 minutes off the bench, leading Team USA to a 94-61 victory over China.
Rather than feeling burdened by the attention, Clark said she remains excited to play basketball and confident in what she can contribute.

Clark credited Team USA coach Kara Lawson with establishing that mentality when the roster first gathered. Lawson’s message was for every player to remain confident regardless of whether she started, came off the bench or saw her minutes change from one game to another.

That guidance is particularly important for a Team USA roster constructed almost entirely from players accustomed to being featured stars on their WNBA teams.
Clark is no exception.
She has spent much of her career with an offense built around her shooting and playmaking. With Team USA, she entered the World Cup opener as a reserve behind a starting lineup that included Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson. Clark did not allow that role to diminish her impact.
She immediately increased the tempo and distributed four assists in her first four minutes. She finished with 11 assists, the most ever by an American player in her Women’s World Cup debut, according to FIBA.
Clark also became the first player in tournament history to produce at least 10 assists without committing a turnover.

Clark embraces one goal with Team USA
Clark explained that individual roles and playing time are secondary to Team USA’s larger objective.
“At the end of the day, we have one goal, and that’s to win gold,” Clark said.
That perspective could help Lawson manage a rotation loaded with accomplished players. Not everyone will start, and no player is guaranteed the same workload in every matchup. Clark’s debut demonstrated how a star can accept a reserve role without becoming passive.
She tied Paige Bueckers and Rhyne Howard for the team lead with 14 points. She created scoring opportunities for nearly everyone around her and was officially named Team USA’s Player of the Game.
Clark said she does not view the pressure surrounding her as a negative. Instead, she described it as something worth appreciating. That may be easier to say after a 33-point victory and a record-setting performance, but Clark has faced scrutiny for long enough to understand that it will not disappear after one game.
The challenge is learning how to use it. Team USA will face Italy on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET before closing Group D play against Czechia on Monday.
