The Denver Broncos have officially promoted Davis Webb from their quarterbacks coach position to offensive coordinator. This was a move that was widely expected following the team's decision to fire Joe Lombardi last week.
Webb, who is only 31 years old, is considered one of the top offensive minds in the game. The Broncos wanted to make sure he stayed with the organization and it seems that Lombardi was made a sacrificial lamb in order to make sure that happened.
Shortly after Lombardi was fired, Webb removed his name from consideration to be the next head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders may have decided to go with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak anyway, but the fact that teams were willing to interview a quarterbacks coach for their head coaching position shows what people around the league think of Webb.
The folks saying Davis Webb doesn't have enough coaching experience do not understand his path.
He basically already was a QB coach with the Bills. BUF wanted to formally make him the QB coach but Brian Daboll offered him $1M to help Daniel Jones. This guy is a football prodigy. pic.twitter.com/bJwYYOtIIx
That is why the Broncos should make a major move with Webb.
Davis Webb should be calling plays for the Broncos in 2026
If this move doesn't lead to Sean Payton turning over play-calling duties to Webb this coming season, then there isn't much point in it, aside from retaining Webb. However, would Webb have taken himself out of consideration for a head coaching job if there wasn't something like that in the works?
Possibly. The Raiders' job could have been seen as unattractive. But it could also be looked at with encouragement as they hold the No. 1 pick in this year's draft and will be able to select Fernando Mendoza, who won the Heisman Trophy and led the Indiana Hoosiers to the college football national championship.
You might be asking what business does a guy who has only been a quarterbacks coach have calling plays. The answer there is that the Broncos just need a change. Payton, who has handled play-calling duties his entire career, needs to entrust someone else to handle those duties. A young offensive mind such as Webb deserves a chance to show what he can do. His connection to the team's starting quarterback is a key factor.
Payton has shown himself to be a little slow in getting some of his calls in. Furthermore, he and Bo Nix don't always see eye to eye, which is why it was pertinent to make sure Webb stayed on the staff.

Webb could offer some fresh insight. Perhaps he could use more of an up-tempo approach, an area where Nix thrives. The Broncos need a change in this department and Webb should not just hold the title for the sake of holding a title, he needs to be given the keys to the vehicle.
