Brock Purdy didn’t get the contract he wanted from the 49ers

Brock Purdy wanted more money.

That’s what ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday. The 49ers and Purdy spent the last couple months in contract extension negotiations, and Purdy’s initial ask was sky high.

How much did Purdy want?

$65 million per year.

That would’ve made him the highest-paid QB in the NFL by a wide margin, with Dak Prescott the current leader at $60M AAV.

In the end, Purdy had to settle for $53 million per year, which has him tied with Jared Goff for the seventh-highest rate in football.

"Yes, that was his initial asking price, 65," Schefter said. "But you know what? Everybody's initial asking price should be high. That's how it should be, and his was. I don't know that he thought he was going to get that, but you might as well start high. Nothing abnormal or unusual about that at all.”

Schefter went on to point out just how much more money the former Mr. Irrelevant will make now.

"And they came in where they did, where now, his total earnings in his first three seasons, he earned a combined $2.6 million,” Schefter said. “Now, he will make $2.9 million per week. So he'll make more in one week this year than he did in his first three seasons."

When you put it like that, things didn’t turn out too bad for Purdy.

He aimed for the record, came up a bit short, but will still be one of the richest athletes in the NFL. Life could be a lot worse.
