The Boston Red Sox are still sorting out parts of their infield heading into the new season, but manager Alex Cora indicated that rookie Caleb Durbin could very well end up handling third base.
Speaking with reporters, Cora suggested that while the team hasn’t made a final decision yet, the coaching staff is confident in Durbin’s ability to handle the position if needed. The Red Sox continue to evaluate how their defense will look as the season gets underway.
“We’ll probably decide that next week, but I feel very comfortable with him at third base,” Cora said, per ESPN.
Boston has spent much of Spring Training experimenting with different defensive combinations across the infield. Durbin was traded for during the winter to serve as another defensive option.
That flexibility has allowed the team to evaluate which players are the best fit at each position before making a final decision on the Opening Day lineup.
For Durbin, the possibility of starting at third base would be a significant opportunity early in his MLB career. The youngster has been highly regarded and needs a chance to show it.
Cora also emphasized that the final decision will come down to the overall roster balance rather than to one player’s performance.
“At the end of the day, it’s who we feel more comfortable with at which position and also the player,” Cora said.
With Opening Day approaching, the decision should come in the coming days.
