Why Cal Raleigh isn't playing for Team USA tonight vs. Dominican Republic

1 hour ago 3

Cal Raleigh has been in the headlines at the World Baseball Classic for what he isn't doing.

The Seattle Mariners catcher, representing Team USA, hasn't acknowledged a couple of his Seattle teammates when they've arrived at home plate in previous games. It's a big to-do about nothing, but it's the main thing Raleigh has been noticed for this tournament.

That's because Raleigh isn't hitting.

Coming off a historic season, Raleigh has struggled, and he's out of the lineup for the semifinal against the Dominican Republic in favor of Will Smith.

Why isn't Cal Raleigh playing tonight?

Cal Raleigh is out of the lineup on Sunday night presumably due to his struggles on the field.

It certainly has nothing to do with the handshake situation.

Raleigh is 0-for-9 in the WBC with five strikeouts.

He has walked four times and driven in one run, but that's it.

He also had a costly passed ball earlier in the tournament on a pitch that it didn't make any sense for Raleigh to mishandle.

It seems like manager Mark DeRosa could still go back to Raleigh if the U.S. makes the final. But it'll be Smith back there catching Paul Skenes against the powerful Dominican lineup, not Raleigh.
