Celtics signing former top-10 recruit to free agent contract

The Boston Celtics have added some size and talent to their roster.

The new signing: Charles Bassey.

Michael Scotto reported the deal on Saturday, noting that it's a 10-day contract for Bassey.

Bassey was once a top-10 recruit in his class who took a bit of an unusual path, going to Western Kentucky.

The Philadelphia 76ers took him with the No. 53 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-10 center has played parts of five NBA seasons since being drafted. Three of those stints have come with the San Antonio Spurs, along with two stints with the 76ers and one with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Bassey had 90 games played with the Spurs in which he averaged 12.1 minutes, 4.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

He only played 7.3 minutes per game in his rookie year stint with the 76ers.

This season, Bassey got two games with the Grizzlies, in which he played a total of 31 minutes and compiled 7 points and 15 rebounds.

He just played one game with the 76ers, too, in which he got just five minutes and scored two points with a block.

Now, the Celtics are adding the frontcourt depth, at least for a short time. It may not be a move that ends up mattering, but Bassey is talented enough to make an impact if given the opportunity.
