The Toronto Blue Jays were so close to breaking their 30+ year drought for a championship, and managed to fall short in their final hour. Now, it’s time for them to enter the offseason and try to retain their superstars and upgrade from their weaknesses.
One of their superstars they need to retain is All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette, but that may be hard for Toronto, as he’s projected for a payday. According to the Athletic’s Tim Britton, Bichette is projected to get a contract of eight years, $212 million.
“For Bichette, Willy Adames’ seven-year, $182 million deal with the Giants last winter is particularly helpful. While Adames’ overall production outstrips Bichette’s, the latter has been a better offensive player, and offense gets paid more than defense…Bichette is also a year younger, which could mitigate some of his injury concerns. That’s where the comp to Seager comes in; Seager was a fellow shortstop who performed when healthy but missed plenty of time, and he was paid off his peak performance. Bichette won’t reach those heights, but he should be able to surpass Adames’ deal.
This season, Bichette finished slashing .311/.357/.483/.840 with 44 doubles, 18 home runs, and 94 RBI in 139 games played. He was also vital in the playoffs for the Jays, and was almost a World Series hero in game seven when he blasted a three-run bomb off Shohei Ohtani to put the Jays up 3-0.
Bichette’s talents have been admired by suitors for many years, so now that a price has been projected, there will be teams willing to pay it.
Hopefully, the Jays find the money and can keep Bichette. That way, they maximize their chances for back-to-back World Series appearances.
