Blue Jays sign 29-year old LHP to free agent contract

The Toronto Blue Jays have made a couple notable pitching signings this offseason.

Their latest free agent addition wouldn't count as particularly noteworthy, but it's another move to add depth to the organization's pitcher ranks.

The Blue Jays signed lefty Michael Plassmeyer to a minor league contract, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Plassmeyer is a 6-foot-2, 29-year old southpaw.

He only pitched in the major leagues for one season, in 2022 with the Philadelphia Phillies, when he allowed 12 earned runs in 11 innings of work.

Plassmeyer is a more stable pitcher in the minor leagues, striking out nearly a quarter of the hitters he faces, although he does have a 4.97 ERA since 2021 in the minor leagues, as well.

He's the lowest-key signing of the Blue Jays pitching ranks so far this offseason.

Toronto signed Dylan Cease to a huge contract and also signed Cody Ponce to compete for a rotation spot.

The Blue Jays also added Tyler Rogers to the back end of the bullpen.

Plassmeyer will presumably come to big league spring training trying to prove he belongs.

But the most likely outcome is beginning the season at Triple-A Buffalo and seeing if he can eventually earn a call-up.
