The Toronto Blue Jays signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a 14-year, $500 million deal, but they could be losing one of their other stars in free agency.
Bo Bichette will be a free agent after this season, but the team could try to trade him for some return near the trade deadline. The Blue Jays are 14-16 to start the season, and if they fall out of contention, they could become sellers near the deadline. MLB Network's Greg Amsinger listed Bichette as one of the best trade chips this season.
"He didn't get the $500 million contract extension. His teammate (Guerrero) did. I know he doesn't have a home run yet," said Amsinger. "I get it, but he's hitting .290. I think he's looking more comfortable at the plate. I don't think the Blue Jays are going to the World Series."
Bichette signed a three-year, $33 million deal in 2023, but his next deal will be far more lucrative. After struggling in 2024, he is having a great season and playing like the two-time All-Star he is. Bichette has led the American League in hits twice and is looking like that player again this year.
Bichette's current contract places him at 16th among shortstops in total value and average annual value. Willy Adames signed with the San Francisco Giants last offseason for $182 million. However, he has never been named an All-Star. Bichette's next deal could reach $200 million, which could make it tough for the Blue Jays to pay him.

There should be a strong market for him as one of the best shortstops in the league. Many teams could be open to adding a rental of Bichette's caliber at the deadline. There are reports of his desire to stay in Toronto and continue playing with Guerrero, but the Blue Jays have not publicly noted that an extension is in the works.
