Bills predicted to add linebacker insurance in former Jets $17 million 5-time Pro Bowler

The Buffalo Bills have a few positions of concern on the defensive side of the ball, with linebacker being among them.

On paper, the Bills have a strong group with Matt Milano, Terrel Bernard and Baylon Specter, but all three of those players come with concerns.

Milano has been plagued by injuries in recent years, Bernard is coming off a down season, and Specter has never proven himself to be anything more than mediocre.

For a team competing for a Super Bowl in 2025 in a loaded AFC, the Bills could definitely use a reinforcement to provide some insurance at the position.

Pro Football Focus' Mason Cameron has an idea to remedy that situation. He predicts the Bills will add former New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley.

With Matt Milano struggling with injuries the past two seasons, Terrel Bernard taking a step back in his development last season (48.1 PFF overall grade) and Baylon Spector having never produced a season-long PFF overall grade above 46.0, the Bills could use some veteran help at linebacker.

Former division rival C.J. Mosley could be the answer. Despite dealing with injuries this past season, the veteran linebacker clocked more than 1,000 in each of the three seasons prior, earning an 82.9 PFF overall grade in his last full season.

A five-time Pro Bowler, Mosley was once considered one of the better linebackers in the NFL. However, he was plagued by injury in 2024, leading to the Jets cutting him earlier this offseason.

In his last full season in 2023, Mosley showed he's still an impact defender. He posted an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 82.9, ranking 11th among linebackers.

Also in 2023, Mosley showed he can do a little bit of everything, as evidenced by his PFF grades of 72.9 in the pass-rush, 63.8 in run defense and 90.6 in coverage, with the pass-rush and coverage grades ranking 11th and first among linebackers, respectively. He would no doubt be a welcomed addition in Buffalo.

As is the case with any free agent Buffalo considers, it's going to come down to the price. Mosley's readjusted deal with the Jets paid him over $8 million annually, but it's fair to assume he could make even less than that after his injury-shortened 2024 season, and with Mosley set to turn 33 this year.

General manager Brandon Beane could get creative and offer Mosley an incentive-laden deal, and it's something he might consider with the Bills giving the veteran an opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl.
