Bills get major update on Darius Slay playing for Buffalo from The Athletic

The Buffalo Bills thought they were upgrading their cornerback room earlier this season when they claimed Darius Slay off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Slay never showed up, though, and the Bills lost cornerback Ja'Marcus Ingram in the process to clear a roster spot that they thought would go to Slay.

Now, the Bills are heading into the final week of the regular season, and Slay is home watching the NFL rather than playing in it.

The Athletic's Tim Graham offered an update on X for those wondering if Slay could still factor into any part of the playoff picture:

"FYI: CB Darius Slay cannot just show up and play for Bills. Once placed on the did-not-report list, he's ineligible to play for Bills and can go elsewhere this season only if they cut him. You can safely assume they won't because Beane doesn't respond favorably to middle fingers."

As Graham notes, the Bills placed Slay on the did-not-report list when that's exactly what he did.

Now, that essentially binds Slay into a no-win situation. The Bills would want to bring him into the building now. And because they have him on that list, they can prevent him from going to any other team.

It's not clear if Slay thought this is what would happen when he didn't report, but it left him without football to play for the rest of the year.

Last season, Slay capped the campaign with a Super Bowl victory with the Philadelphia Eagles.

This season, Slay will watch the postseason from far away from the field.
