The American has admitted that he enjoyed the game more than tennis when he was younger, since it was the ‘cooler sport’ in the USA. The American broke into the Top 10 of the ATP World Rankings and won his maiden Masters 1000 event at the National Bank Open. Reflecting on the year gone by during an episode of ‘The Long Game’ on his YouTube channel, the 23-year-old said,
“I'm getting more and more consistent as the years go on. You know, it's only my third year out on tour and I forget sometimes that I finished last year ranked outside the top 20. I think I was 21 in the world to finish the year last year and this year I wanted to make Turin (ATP Finals). That was my big goal.”Shelton went on to open up about his ‘big goals' for the upcoming season, saying,
“I’ve made a lot of improvements. We really take pride in improving on little parts of our game and you know all the 1%, the smaller performance-based, non-result-based goals that (mean) the results are kind of an afterthought. I got big goals, dreams, aspirations in the sport. Every year I feel a little bit closer.”Ben Shelton will begin his 2026 season at the ASB Classic, an ATP 250 event scheduled to take place between January 12 and 17. He will be joined at the tournament by the likes of Casper Ruud, Cameron Norrie, Gael Monfils and more.
