While it appears Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby isn't going to be traded again after the debacle with the Baltimore Ravens, the Chicago Bears reportedly aren't giving up hope.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Bears "haven't given up the dream" of trading for Crosby.
“They haven’t given up the dream of a Maxx Crosby opening if they can try to buy low a little bit now that he’s back with the Raiders," he said.
"They kicked the tires on it a couple weeks ago," Fowler added. "They ultimately didn’t get seriously involved, but he’s the type of player they would love. Maybe there’s a draft situation they can pull off there.”
General manager Ryan Poles confirmed that the Bears did have interest in Crosby, and understandably so, Chicago has a need opposite Montez Sweat.
"We were involved. We checked into it," Poles said. "We looked to see if it made sense. Had some dialogue. I'll leave it at that."
While the Bears might still have the Crosby dream in their heads, it is probably a pipe dream at this point.
Based on rumors and what Crosby has said himself, all signs point to him simply staying with the Raiders.
But there have been other rumors suggesting the Raiders may be open to trading him again, but they are not going to give Crosby away and will likely continue to look for two first-round picks, simply because they don't have to trade him.
According to reports, Las Vegas never really wanted to trade Crosby, anyway, and his return does not impact the moves the team made in free agency because of the mountain of cap space Las Vegas had, so they can afford to keep him.
Knowing that, it remains unlikely the Bears will be able to get Crosby at a reduced price unless something drastically changes.
Then, there's the report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, which said that Chicago simply doesn't have the financial capability to take on Crosby's contract.
“The Bears don’t have any money right now, Greeny. They’re broke," he said of a possible trade for Crosby.
As great as it would be for the Bears to acquire Crosby, there just doesn't seem like a realistic path for that to happen, although Bears fans will likely take this shred of hope given how dire the need is along the edge.
