Barcelona contract rebel offers future update amid exit links

The recent few weeks have been extremely unsettling for Frenkie de Jong who has been linked with a move out of Barcelona several times. The Dutch midfielder missed a major chunk of the campaign due to ankle injury, which surely didn't help his cause.

However, De Jong has cleared his stance in a recent interview with Voetbal Zone via SPORT. The 28-year-old's current contract with Blaugrana runs out in June 2026 and till now there haven't been talks about extensions. But personally, De Jong is keen to stay at Camp Nou.

"I think I'm going to renew for Barça. I can't be one hundred percent sure but if everything goes well it will be done. My intention is to renew this summer, but we'll see what happens. It is a negotiation, and you cannot say when. The important thing is that both parties want it and I think we will reach an agreement," De Jong revealed to VZ.

He cleared his aspirations of continuing despite several links of leaving the club. But he did reveal his thoughts with a pinch of caution as he doesn't know about club's intentions just yet.

As per reports, the midfielder is all set to disassociate himself from his current agent, Ali Dursun, who has been a major obstacle between him and Barcelona in terms of reaching agreements in the past.

However, when he was asked about the issue, De Jong remained tight lipped. “I can’t talk about my agent. I can’t say anything about that now. Right now, I’m focused on the national team, and then we’ll see.”

What did Joan Laporta say about De Jong's future?

A few months ago, De Jong was one of the players that Barcelona were willing to offload. However, things took a massive U-turn after his performances for Hansi Flick. The Dutchman became one of the most important figures in the German's system and therefore the manager wanted De Jong to stay at the club.

Recently Barcelona president Joan Laporta opened up on contract situations of several players and there he revealed his intentions of keeping De Jong at the club for the foreseeable future. Despite his ankle injury, Laporta credited the 28-year-old for his contributions in midfield.

“I think he’s having a good time. Even when you don’t win, people have a worse time, and he also had an ankle injury. He especially likes to be 100% fit. And because he is also a man who runs a lot, who has a lot of courage, who sets the pace of the games," Laporta told Mundo Deportivo.

"Now he has recovered and we are working on that contract renovation. He is very excited, we are very determined to do whatever is necessary to keep him going, and well, he is fixing some of his things, personal, professional, and when this is already fixed, we will be able to announce that he continues with us.”

De Jong featured in 46 matches for Barcelona last season out of which 26 appearances came in La Liga with a couple of goals and assists. He provides great solidity in midfield and was a fulcrum in Flick's system.
