Astros' Kevin Alvarez draws strong comparisons to Kyle Tucker with sweet swing

Coming into the 2026 season, the Houston Astros don't have the most loaded farm system across baseball. However, that does not mean there are not some exciting players waiting in the wings.

Kevin Alvarez is the team's top prospect, and one that fans will want to get familiar with. He departed Cuba with his father in 2021, moved to the Dominican Republic, and turned into one of the best international talents in the 2025 class.

He signed with the Astros last year, and he has quickly turned heads in the minors.

One thing that stands out with Alvarez's game is his raw power. He is still young, so he is still developing, but the raw power is there. He has no problems barreling up baseballs to all sides of the field.

He has started to generate a buzz after what he did with the Astros during their preseason camp for minor league players back in January, winning the hitting and outfield-defense competitions.

It will be some time before he gets his MLB debut, but fans should start paying attention to him now. According to Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter, he gives him the Kyle Tucker comparison, with Alvarez's smooth left-handed swing.

"The Astros were the only team without a player on our preseason Top 100 prospect list, but that might not be the case for long if Alvarez makes a smooth transition stateside. The 2025 international signing hit .301/.419/.455 with 17 extra-base hits and more walks than strikeouts, and his smooth left-handed swing has drawn comparisons to Kyle Tucker."

However, some analysts are questioning his ability to stick in center field. If he loses any quickness as he gets stronger, he may have to transition away from center and be used as a corner outfielder.
