Four-time Major champion Aryna Sabalenka will face fifth seed Jessica Pegula in the group stage of the WTA Finals 2025.

Sabalenka kicked off her campaign against Jasmine Paolini. The World No. 1 got off to a fast start in the first set, snagging a break of serve in the second game. However, Paolini was able to level the score down the line.

That didn't deter Sabalenka, who secured another break of serve in the eighth game to go 5-3 up, and served out the set in the next game. She then dished out a breadstick in the second set to register a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Pegula took on defending champion Coco Gauff in her first match of the round-robin phase. Both players struggled to hold serve at the start of the first set. There were five consecutive breaks of serve, with Pegula pulling ahead to lead 3-2. She secured an additional break of serve in the final game of the set to take it.

Pegula rallied from a break down twice in the second set. She stopped Gauff from serving out the set twice and even saved a set point to force a tie-break. However, she came up short in it to lose the set. The 31-year-old got back on track in the decider, reeling off five games on the trot for a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 win.

Sabalenka's win over Paolini marked her 60th of the season, the first time she has reached this milestone in her career. She hit 24 winners compared to 28 unforced errors, and won 66 percent of her first serve points.

Pegula fought past Gauff to begin her campaign on a winning note as well. She struck 23 winners against 33 unforced errors, and won 70 percent of points on the back of her first serve.

Sabalenka has enjoyed the upper hand in her rivalry with Pegula. However, the latter won their most recent meeting at last month's Wuhan Open from a set down. She also ended Sabalenka's 20-match winning streak at the tournament in the process.

Sabalenka will be keen to avenge that loss. Pegula has never scored back-to-back wins in this match-up, and has lost her next four matches against the Belarusian after a win. Given how they performed in their first group tie, Sabalenka will be the favorite to win.
