Top seed Aryna Sabalenka will take on eighth seed Jasmine Paolini in the group stage of the WTA Finals 2025.

Sabalenka started the year with a title in Brisbane. She came quite close to winning the Australian Open for the third time but lost to Madison Keys in the final. After a disappointing Middle East swing, she bounced back with a runner-up finish at the Indian Wells Open and a title at the Miami Open.

While Sabalenka came up short in the Stuttgart final, she staged a quick turnaround to win the Madrid Open a fortnight later. A quarterfinal exit from the Italian Open was followed by a runner-up finish at the French Open. She lost to Coco Gauff despite leading by a set.

A semifinal loss to Amanda Anisimova crushed Sabalenka's Wimbledon dreams. She then failed to defend her title in Cincinnati. Nevertheless, she defended her US Open title by beating Anisimova in the final. She directly competed at the Wuhan Open after that. She was the three-time defending champion, and lost to Jessica Pegula in three sets in the semifinals.

Paolini's results during the early hardcourt swing were decent, although she didn't find her best form until the Miami Open, where she made the semifinals. Winning the Italian Open was the highlight of her clay swing, along with the doubles title at the French Open.

A runner-up at Wimbledon a year ago, Paolini lost in the second round this time. While she came up short against Iga Swiatek in the Cincinnati final, she still made an early exit from the US Open. She performed consistently during the Asian swing right from the start. She reached the quarterfinals in Beijing followed by semifinals in Wuhan and Ningbo.

Sabalenka was the first player to qualify for the WTA Finals, achieving the feat in early July. She has a 59-11 record this year and has lost prior to the quarterfinals only twice. Her consistency kept her on top of the rankings the entire year, and she will finish the season atop the summit as well.

This will be Sabalenka's fifth consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals. She finished as the runner-up in 2022, and has made the semifinals every year since then. Paolini booked her spot in the WTA Finals a couple of weeks ago. She made her debut last year and didn't make it through the group stage. She has a 46-18 record this year.

Sabalenka has a 11-4 record against top 10 players this year, which includes two wins over Paolini. Her aggressive shotmaking has helped her win her past four matches against the Italian, all in straight sets. The World No. 1 will be expected to continue this streak against Paolini based on their history and form this year.
