Elon Musk has reacted to a reported major decline in Japan's birth rate in 2025. The country is set to record its lowest-ever birth rate in a year since 1899.
As per a report by the Financial Times, published on December 28, 2025, Japan's birth rate is set to be below 670,000 in 2025. While the issue of a reduced birth rate has been going on for a long time in the country, this is much lower than the expected predictions. As per the report, experts predicted it to get this low by around 2041.
Moreover, since the records began in 1899, this is the lowest-ever birth rate in Japan. Elon Musk reacted to a post by @cb_doge on X (formerly Twitter), which shared this news. He commented:
"Wow, another record low. Population collapse …"@cb_doge Wow, another record low. Population collapse …
Notably, Japan's prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, had labeled population decline the "biggest problem" in the country in November. During the inaugural meeting of the Population Strategy Headquarters, Takaichi declared (h/t Newsweek):
“Recognizing that the greatest challenge facing our country is population decline, we have established the Population Strategy Headquarters to comprehensively promote countermeasures. “These include maintaining essential social security services in local areas, advancing measures to address the declining birth rate, creating living environments in rural areas where people—especially young people and women—can live and work with peace of mind, building new regional economies that generate added value, and promoting coexistence with foreign talent," she added.Japan's population has now declined for 17 consecutive years. Experts have named issues like long work hours and expensive childcare among the factors for this decline.
Elon Musk has shared his thoughts on Japan's declining population in the past

He has been urging for methods to control it since 2022, claiming that if something isn't done, the country will "cease to exist".
In a comment on a post on X about Japan's birth rate, Musk commented on May 7, 2022:
"At risk of stating the obvious, unless something changes to cause the birth rate to exceed the death rate, Japan will eventually cease to exist. This would be a great loss for the world."@WholeMarsBlog At risk of stating the obvious, unless something changes to cause the birth rate to exceed the death rate, Japan will eventually cease to exist. This would be a great loss for the world.
He then shared his concern again in a post on X on August 7 this year, adding that the decline has nothing to do with Artificial Intelligence (AI). He wrote:
"Japan will lose almost a million people this year. This demographic inevitably was set in motion half a century ago and has nothing to do with AI. AI is the only hope for turning this around."Japan will lose almost a million people this year. This demographic inevitably was set in motion half a century ago and has nothing to do with AI. AI is the only hope for turning this around.
Meanwhile, Japan has introduced numerous steps to improve birth rates and population. Former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a child and family policy package, which will spend around $22.3 billion (3.6 trillion Japanese yen) per year towards the cause. This will begin in 2026.
As aforementioned, the current Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has formed the Population Strategy Headquarters to monitor and work on improving the situation.
