Analyst has high hopes for 2026 Chiefs thanks to 1 free agency signing

The Kansas City Chiefs had an odd down year in 2025, as the franchise finally saw what happens when you are at the top for so long: you need a break.

With a soft roster reset, the Chiefs are now looking at the NFL Draft armed with two first-round picks, plus they addressed the running back issue, signing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker.

Travis Kelce returns, and the hope is Mahomes will be ready for Week 1, so the Chiefs still have a lot of firepower.

And for Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame, his reason for hope for the Chiefs in 2026 is what Walker can do for the Kansas City run game.

"Kansas City should finally have a running game with Kenneth Walker III," Verderame wrote. "With Patrick Mahomes potentially back from his torn ACL in Week 1, the offense might be more potent than any season since 2022."

Can Chiefs shift offensive mentality?

Having been so Mahomes-centric for years (and rightly so), now the Chiefs might have to change their approach.

Patrick is coming off an ACL injury, so leaning on him to shoulder the load isn't wise. Enter Walker.

Could the Chiefs transition from a heavy passing offense to a more run-dominant unit in 2026? Well, Walker certainly gives them that option, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs win a couple of games purely off the rushing attack.

But having been used to doing things one way for so long, can the Chiefs change? Don't let Mahomes shoulder the burden; let others like Walker take some of that pressure off.

Kenneth was signed for a reason. The Chiefs must use him as a way to protect Patrick, at least early on in the season.
