The 2025 College Football Playoff is finally here, as two marquee schools will begin the tournament.

In perhaps the most intriguing of the four first-round matchups, No, 8 Oklahoma will host No. 9 Alabama on Friday night. These SEC two teams represent five programs from the conference who made the 12-team field, and will be the only first-round matchup that is a rematch from the regular season.

The Crimson Tide are coming off a loss to Georgia in the SEC championship, as there were questions whether they would even make the field. However, Alabama's win over Georgia in the regular season is considered one of the best victories of the regular season, as the 10-3 team is the only three-loss team in the Playoff.

Quarterback Ty Simpson is the player to watch for Alabama. At one point, Simpson was considered a Heisman Trophy candidate, but he struggled down the stretch to play his way out of being a finalist altogether. The last time he played the Sooners, Simpson produced 326 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma has been set in the CFP field for a while now, but the No. 8 Sooners haven't been playing their best either. After beating Alabama on November 15, Oklahoma won two-straight games against middling Missouri and LSU, but failed to score more than 17 points in either game.

The Sooners are know for a stout defense under head coach Brent Venables, as the unit has held opponents to under 20 points in all but two games this year. The offense is led by quarterback John Mateer, a transfer from Washington State who saw an injury derail a once-promising statistical 2025 season.

Alabama and Oklahoma will play to decide who gets to face No. 1 Indiana in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.
