Akash Deep made a comeback as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member squad for the two-match Test series against South Africa, which begins in Kolkata on November 14. The Bengal pacer returned to the side after missing out on a place during the two-match Test series against the West Indies in October.
During his absence, Akash represented the Rest of India in the Irani Trophy, bagging three wickets. The 28-year-old also played for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, picking up two wickets each against Uttarakhand and Gujarat, respectively. Apart from his bowling, he is also handy with the bat in the lower order.
Akash last played for India in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, scalping 13 wickets in three Tests, including a 10-wicket match in Birmingham. Despite his comeback, he is likely to warm the bench with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the squad. The Men in Blue usually play with two pacers in home Tests.
While Akash Deep made it to the 15-member squad, Mohammad Shami didn't find a place despite his 15 wickets in his first two games for Bengal in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. The 35-year-old played his last Test for India against Australia in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final.
In this article, we will compare Akash Deep’s records to those of Mohammad Shami.
