Veteran India opener Rohit Sharma scripted history by becoming the new No. 1-ranked batter in the latest ICC ODI ranking. He achieved the feat following his brilliant performances in the recent three-match series against Australia.
Rohit Sharma overtook his own teammate and current ODI captain Shubman Gill to claim the top spot. He displayed brilliant form in the Australia series, scoring 202 runs from three innings at an average of 101 with an unbeaten hundred and a half-century.
The veteran returned to international cricket after last having played the 2025 Champions Trophy, where he led India to victory as well. He will look to carry his form and perform consistently with an aim of playing the 2027 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma became only the fifth Indian batter to be ranked No.1 in the ICC ODI ranking. That said, here is a look at the five Indian batters who have achieved this feat.
#5 Rohit Sharma
As mentioned, Rohit Sharma became the fifth Indian to be ranked No.1 in the ODI ranking. He moved two places to the top with 781 rating points. At 38, this came as a remarkable milestone for the former captain.
He has amassed 11370 runs in the format from 276 matches at an average of 49.22 with 33 hundreds and 59 half-centuries. Rohit Sharma had achieved his career-best rating points (882) after the game against Sri Lanka at Headingley during the 2019 World Cup. He had a dream tournament, scoring 648 runs with five centuries.
#4 Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill, who was replaced at the top by Rohit Sharma, was ranked No.1 as the 2025 Champions Trophy began. He had scored 259 runs from three matches in the home series against England before the mega event, which had taken him to the top with 796 rating points.
This was not the first time that Gill was ranked No.1. He had previously achieved the feat during the 2023 ODI World Cup as well. His career-best rating points (847) came after the second ODI against Australia at Indore in 2023, where he had scored a century as well.
#3 Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli is among the greatest batters to have played ODI cricket. The modern-day great became the No. 1-ranked batter in the format for the first time in 2013. While AB De Villiers took the top spot, Kohli soon reclaimed the position once again during the 2014 Asia Cup.
In fact, he remained the No. 1-ranked batter in the format from October 2017 to April 2021. The right-hander is the second-highest run-getter in ODIs with 14255 runs from 305 games at an average of 57.71 with 51 centuries. He achieved his best-ever rating, a record 909 points, in 2018.
#2 MS Dhoni
Having won two 50-over ICC trophies (World Cup and Champions Trophy) as captain, MS Dhoni became the second Indian to reach the top of the ODI rankings in 2006, when he achieved the feat for the first time by replacing Ricky Ponting.
Dhoni was ranked No.1 two more times, having reclaimed the top spot in 2008 and 2010. He piled on 10773 runs from 350 ODIs with 10 hundreds and 73 fifties. Dhoni also holds the record for becoming the fastest batter to become the No.1-ranked ODI batter, having first achieved the feat in just 40 matches.
#1 Sachin Tendulkar
The legendary Sachin Tendulkar was the first-ever Indian batter to be ranked No.1 in the ODI ranking. He achieved the feat back in 1996. Among the greatest batters to have ever played the game, Tendulkar climbed to the top spot in the formar multiple times in his career.
He achieved his best-ever rating points (881) in ODIs in 1998 against Zimbabwe. Tendulkar is the leading run-scorer in the format with a massive 18426 runs from 463 matches at an average of 44.83 with 49 hundreds and 96 half-centuries.
