Zootopia 2 is now one of the few films worldwide that has raked in more than $1 billion at the box office. The Disney animated sequel made the mark just over a fortnight after its debut in cinemas, which is a testimony to the franchise's lasting appeal almost ten years after the original film changed the ground for the storytelling of animations.

The remarkable performance of Zootopia 2 places it among a small group of animated features to reach the billion-dollar mark, the majority of which come from Disney.

Zootopia 2 raced past $1 billion worldwide in just 17 days, becoming the fastest PG-rated animated film to hit the milestone while setting records for the biggest animated opening, strongest Thanksgiving debut, and one of the highest-grossing non-local releases ever in China.

Details on Zootopia 2 crossing 1 billion at the box office explored

Disney Animation posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) on December 12, 2025 that Zootopia 2 had globally $1 billion total after only 17 days of the cinema, hence this was the fastest PG-rated film to get there.

The sequel garnered $232.7 million on the home front, whereas overseas markets pumped in a hefty $753.4 million, which elevated the box office tally to $986.1 million globally just before the leap over the milestone.

Before the Thanksgiving holiday, the film was launched in North America and had achieved a domestic debut of $158 million over the five days. The global take for the opening weekend stood at $559 million, which also means the all-time best debut for any animated film a report by Variety stated.

Moreover, the statistics elevated Zootopia 2 to the rank of the second most enormous box office first day during Thanksgiving in history and the fourth-highest worldwide opening ever, only behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Zootopia 2's great success in China has been the main contributor to its worldwide gross, as the film has managed to make close to 430 million dollars there so far. Hence, it became the second most successful film after Avengers: Endgame, in terms of non-local releases in the country, and the franchise's popularity in the area has skyrocketed since the debut of Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disneyland, which has broadened the audience's understanding of the film's universe and characters.

Zootopia 2 made it into the billion-dollar worldwide club only after Lilo & Stitch and Ne Zha 2, thereby becoming the third film of this year to do so. Besides, it is only one of 13 animated films that have ever hit such a stage, hence allowing Disney to remain a dominant force in the animated box office industry.

The plot of Zootopia 2 centers around the continuation of the adventures of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde immediately after the latter two became official partners at the Zootopia Police Department.

While looking for a missing reptile, they happen to find various clues that seem to suggest the city’s origin gets more deeply intertwined with the crimes they stumbled upon and the historical injustices. When the case gets more dangerous, they are cleared of being the perpetrators and forced to do the job to exonerate themselves illegally, since the police cannot be trusted.

The follow-up story rewinds the movie world and presents new boroughs, animals, and political unrest to go with the cop-bromance that the prior movie was made of. Also, in operation at that time were themes of trust, identity, and systemic bias to root the plot once more, making Zootopia 2 suitable both as a child-friendly film and as a social allegory.

Jared Bush is credited as the main writer and director, while Byron Howard is the co-director. In addition to this, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman return as Judy Hopps's and Nick Wilde's voices, respectively.

Besides that, Shakira, Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, Nate Torrence, Don Lake, Bonnie Hunt, and Jenny Slate are also star characters from the original team.

There are a few new faces in the sequel to Zootopia. Ke Huy Quan plays the role of Gary De'Snake, a conspiracy theory buff named Nibbles Maplestick is played by Fortune Feimster, and Andy Samberg is the new character, Pawbert Lynxley.

Besides that, the extended cast also features Quinta Brunson, Danny Trejo, Patrick Warburton, and David Strathairn, among others, joining in the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌performance.
