Yankees urged to call up No. 1 prospect that would be bad news for Anthony Volpe

The New York Yankees have been one of the best teams in Major League Baseball this season, and there are still plenty of ways for the team to get better.

Carlos Rodon, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Lagrange, and Elmer Rodriguez could all become mainstays of the MLB roster to make things even better than they are right now.

But, as Christopher Kline of Fansided.com is urging, there's another player in No. 1 prospect George Lombard Jr. that should also be called up.

"That said, George Lombard Jr. is their consensus No. 1 prospect, and he's tearing through the minors with an .873 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A this season," Kline writes.

Lombard deserves a promotion, and Kline is urging the Yankees to call him up soon. But, there would be a big consequence for one Yankees player, as Anthony Volpe would no longer have a spot on the MLB roster for the Yankees.

Anthony Volpe would get bad news with a George Lombard promotion

Lombard is a shortstop who has played well this season and is one of the top prospects in all of Major League Baseball.

With Volpe being a disappointment compared to the hype early in his career, the Yankees are very likely to find a long-term shortstop other than Volpe.

And depending on how Lombard looks in the Majors when he's called up, the Yankees' future at shortstop is very possibly going to be Lombard and not Volpe.

Volpe would need to move positions, which could mean a slide over to second base if Jazz Chisholm Jr. leaves in free agency this upcoming offseason.

But if Lombard is called up this season, and the Yankees have a plan at second base and have their third base spot filled, Volpe won't have a spot on the MLB roster.

Kline is urging the Yankees to call up Lombard, and one of the biggest impacts of such a promotion would be the lack of a fit for Volpe.
