Yankees once refused to trade Anthony Volpe for NL MVP contender

The New York Yankees hoped for so much more from Anthony Volpe.

A former top-10 prospect in the sport, Volpe hasn't delivered as hoped while playing shortstop in the Bronx. He could still improve and pan out, but his hype appears to have been much too high.

Nothing is a better example of that than one tweet from four years ago that's circulating this week.

Once upon a time, the Yankees turned down a trade for Matt Olson because they didn't want Volpe involved.

Here's that old report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post:

Yankees are pessimistic on Freeman, and have said no to the ask of Volpe plus more for Matt Olson. So Anthony Rizzo seems to be the most realistic at 1B for them now. And that’s not so bad.

That news actually came out on the same day that the A's traded Olson to the Atlanta Braves.

With the Braves, Olson has shown up and played every day and been an absolute star.

In the Bronx, Olson's lefty swing would've been awesome, dominating the short porch in right field.

Instead, the Yankees had to rely on veterans for a few years, and they've now come across Ben Rice, who is a star in his own right.

The real disappointment is Volpe. That's how highly he was thought of four years ago. Now? It sure would be nice to have Olson in pinstripes.
